DISCLAIMER: You should know something about me, I am a spot person, this means that having a “spot” is important.
Vigilant is currently going through some growing pains. My work term with them started at the end of April and since then two permanent full-time employees have been hired. This means that employees have been squeezed and shifted and we’ve had to do some serious rearranging around the office.
Now there are two senior employees sharing an office (Holly and Lloyd). When our latest project manager arrived, I was in a mezzanine between desks, meaning I was sitting at other people’s desks if they were away on vacation. After much coordination, two new desks arrived for the future work term students, and I know have an *official* seat once again!
These desks are located on the other side of a dividing wall, to which Terry says I have my own wing to the office. I have taken it upon myself to brighten-up this opening “wing” space. This includes two plants (because I am a crazy plant lady) and other little touches of personality such as a custom lace file folder that I made out of a shirt when I was 7.
Making a space your own is important. We spend so much time in the office that the space we work in should reflect our personality. This is a simple concept that I believe strongly aligns with Vigilant’s values and the awesome team that we have here.
I understand that not all employers are as open to the idea of employees making office spaces personal, but sometimes your personal enjoyment can come from little things. These little things can include changing your computer background to a personalized picture, bringing in your own coffee mug, or even using a pen that you enjoy. This last pen point is one I will explain a little more (sorry for the lame pun). Last week I ran out to get office supplies and a few people mentioned that they would like a particular type of pen. There are a few employees here (me included) that are “pen specific”.
At Vigilant, employees can truly make their spaces customizable. A couple examples that we have here at the office: I have large plants, Megan has a salt lamp, Sheldon have a certificate certifying that he has “successfully made it to Flavor Town”, Grant has a one-foot tall plush Yoda, and Terry’s office is mix of: Game of Thrones, Marvel, and countless video game references (including a custom Chrono Trigger clock on the wall!).
Like I said, it depends on how accepting your office is. Adam, the newest addition to the Vigilant party gang, made his space his own by bringing in a special edition. Please scroll down to meet Vivian. The only downfall of bringing in an office doggo is that my productivity will be decreased by about 50% because one hand is rubbing the doggo and the other is trying to do work.
That’s all for now!
