Stilettos To Steel Toes Part 1

On Monday, April 28 I began my third engineering work term with Vigilant Management. Construction project management is a whole new ball park for me. I had an idea in the back of my mind of what a project manager did and I suppose I was somewhat on track. I visualized project management as a busy occupation in which you need to know everything about the project. What I didn't realize is that a project manager is truly the driving force in completing projects not only to the desired quality but also in keeping it on time and on budget.

Within my first few days I started to gain a better understanding of how this whole project management thing works. As far as I can tell, a project manager is the communication link between everyone involved in a project.

One thing that pleasantly surprised me thus far in the work term is the amount of technical knowledge required of a project manager. As an engineering student who loves interacting with people, this seems to be a perfect fit of my career expectations as a result of completing an engineering degree. I am amazed at how much I enjoy construction, in my mind there is nothing better than looking at a technical drawing and watch it come to life. Dirt, love it. Concrete, love it. Steel, love it. Who knew the girl who grew up playing dolls and painting nails would turn out loving construction as much as I do? As they say, “Stilettos to Steel Toes.”

I look forward to the rest of the work term with Vigilant Management. I can already tell that I'm going to love working in this field.
