A Culture Worth Talking About

As I round off my sixth week here at Vigilant, I couldn’t be happier with my decision to accept the position of HR & Operations Coordinator with this unique and fun company. Deciding to accept this position for my first of three work terms seems like a no brainer at this point, but back when I had to decide my fate for the next four months, things were a little more stressful. Out of all the job postings available to me, Vigilant's stood out among the rest. It seemed to have a fun and flexible work environment, an interesting industry I knew nothing about, and more importantly, meaningful job responsibilities. All of which turned out to be true.

Within a week of being submersed in the culture and meeting the team, it's easy to see that the people who work here love it. They have a passion for what they do, and it's infectious. I came into this position knowing almost nothing about the construction industry, but I was met with a team that is always eager to share their stories and experiences, making me feel like a part of the team from day one and learning about the industry all at the same time.

I know many people have previously spoken about the culture here, but it’s because when you are immersed in it you become passionate about it and it becomes something you want to share with others. Working here is more than just showing up for the day, doing your work and then back home to repeat it all over again the next day. It’s about feeling like you’re contributing to something bigger. Having a sense of purpose and belonging. Which is why when I get an email in the evening, although I’m not expected to answer it if I have the time I’m going to do it. Not because I feel like I have to, but because it doesn’t feel like work in the first place. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t arrive on day one and understand exactly how the culture works. Mostly because it just isn’t something I’ve ever experienced before. But it’s easy to see why it works. When you have the opportunity to figure out what works best for you, in terms of when and where you chose to work, you can then become the most efficient and productive employee that you can be, all while maintaining a balanced life. Not to mention working with like minded people. So, the only question is, why aren’t more organizations sharing this vision?

Whether it be the culture, the people, or the work, there are countless reasons to love Vigilant. I am only too excited to see what the next three months have in store for Vigilant, and how I can contribute to it. Moreover, I feel as though I’ve kickstarted my career, no matter where it leads me, in the right direction, and that is a great feeling to have.
