Stilettos To Steel Toes - Summer 2015 - Part 1

We are bringing back our popular blog series "Stilettos to Steel Toes" with our summer work term student, Erin! Stay tuned for weekly updates as she explores the wild world of construction and project management! - Terry

I began my workterm with Vigilant Management on Monday, May 4th, 2015. This is my first engineering workterm so the construction industry and project management are completely new to me. The project management side of this job really peaked my interest, and once I had visited a construction site I realized the amount of work involved to get a project off the ground.

My first job site visit was a little overwhelming. I was not anticipating that there would be so many things happening simultaneously. From concrete pouring to electrical work to masonry… everything around me was buzzing. I was impressed by how much knowledge the senior project managers I was working with had with regards to construction. I am happy to say that I am starting to gain some of their knowledge. I’ve learned just how critical it is to have a good project manager who can keep projects on schedule and within budget. They must be able to communicate effectively with everyone involved in a project and keep them motivated.

At the end of my first day, in response to a “snapchat”, one of my friends asked what I’d been doing to be all dressed up. My response was “Oh, just walking around in a hard hat and work boots all day”. Although he knows I am not afraid to get my hands dirty, he was quite amused that Erin, the girl with the fancy shoes and colorful tops, was actually sporting a hard hat and work boots. Hence the phrase “from stilettos to steel toes”.

I hope to continue learning from the things I experience at Vigilant Management. The summer looks promising—I’m excited to try my hand at project management!
