Well, here’s the blog you’ve all been waiting for! (Yes, I tweeted about this yesterday to get the hype going for this, because I promise it’s going to be fun!)
Today, I’m getting a kitten. I’m 21, and I work full time at Vigilant. I’ve had many people tell me that it’s not responsible for me to get a pet, because “I won’t have time for one” or that “getting and training a pet while working full time isn’t going to be easy.” Now, if I worked under normal circumstances, I would likely agree with you. But, truth is, I don’t work under “normal circumstances.”
When I first talked conversationally about getting a kitten with my supervisor, I had no intention of getting a kitten so soon, because I didn’t think I had the time. That’s what I had been told, and in the conventional realm of work, it made sense. However, to my surprise, the reaction I got was “go ahead and get one now, there’s no better time for it!”
I’m sure the look on my face was pure disbelief. For about 10 seconds. Then it clicked: that’s how Vigilant operates!
I have been working under a “results oriented work environment” for over two months, yet it still seems surreal to me that I really have the luxury of flexible work arrangements. For anyone who is skeptical of such an arrangement, I implore you to keep reading.
I have the luxury of working remotely if I need to. Most of my work is either on my computer, or up in the Cloud. Meaning that I can access whatever I need, whenever and wherever I need. But it’s not just about that! I sit here, writing this blog, prepping my work for the day, so that I can take off early this afternoon to go pick out a kitten, and then welcome it into my home.
What makes this arrangement so exciting, and quite honestly so surreal, is the company-wide acceptance of the flexible work arrangements! I’m writing this as a co-op student, on a work term. The freedom given to me, even at this level of work, is freeing and quite liberating. I have been given a level of trust by this company that makes me feel like I’m truly one of the team; one of the family. I share the same level of freedom in my job as the Directors and even President have. It’s a complete, top to bottom, acceptance of this practice. Which is why everyone feels so comfortable taking advantage of it.
Trust me when I say that Vigilant truly does have flexible work arrangements, and that it’s amazing to have that level of freedom and trust in a company.
Now, on to the cute and fun part of this blog! I’ll be out and about this afternoon, looking for my new companion! Expect live tweets and possibly (who am I kidding, more than likely!) pictures about my adventure, since now it’s officially relevant to something job-related! Keep an eye for me and my kitten in the next 24 hours, I promise I’ll keep you up to date with the search!
